Joseph Morris and Elizabeth Vernon

Joseph MORRIS. (MORREY). [Familytree].
Joseph was born on 17 April 1795, at Burwardsley, Cheshire, England; son of James MORRIS and Hannah LEDSAM.

It is said that he was born on 17 December 1795 (source?). Since he was christened in April of 1795, and if it is true that he was born in December, he must have been born 17 December 1794. However, it is noted that his death records (S14) shows that he was born on 17 April 1795, just two days before his christening.

He was christened on 19 April 1795 at Harthill, Cheshire, England, where he is listed as (Joseph Morris-S9)(Joseph Morry-S13), son of (Joseph Morris and Hannah Morris-S9)(James Morry and Hannah-S13).

He married Elizabeth Vernon on 24 July 1815 at St. Oswald’s Church in Chester, Cheshire, England.

St. Oswald’s Parish Church (Church of England) was located in Queen Street. It was an ancient parish church, originally serving the townships of Bache, Blacon cum Crabwall (part), Churton Heath, Croughton, Great Boughton, Huntington, Iddinshall, Lea Newbold, Newton by Chester, Saighton, Upton by Chester (part), Wervin, and part of the City of Chester. It closed in 1881 and was replaced by the parish church St.Thomas, Parkgate Street. Registers of baptisms 1581-1945, marriages 1581-1969 and burials 1581-1854 are at the Cheshire Record Offire (CRO).

Joseph and Elizabeth were living in Handley at the time of the birth of their first child, George. It is not stated what brought them to Handley. There was another Morris family living in Handley at the time; that of Francis Morris and Margaret Capper, but it has not yet been determined how they might be related.

Joseph and Elizabeth apparently moved from Handley to Burwardsley sometime between 1816 and 1818, according to the birth information for the children.

Joseph was a very strict Methodist. He was a shoemaker by trade. He was often absent from home for long periods of time, and Elizabeth moved to Dukinfield where their son George lived. After Elizabeth died in November 1838, Joseph moved to Dukinfield to care for the family.

Joseph died (29-?) (28-S2,S4,S14) April 1861 in Birchlane at Dukinfield, Cheshire, England. He was buried 1 May 1861 at St. Johns Church in Dukinfield, Cheshire, England. (S15). Dukinfield was at that time part of Cheshire, but is now a suburb of Greater Manchester. (Dukinfield, Metropolitan Borough of Tameside, Greater Manchester, England ). Dukinfield was incorporated into Greater Manchester, and thus Lincolnshire, in the 20th Century.

However, see this story submitted to FamilySearch:
Joseph Morris & Elizabeth Vernon. Elizabeth Vernon was born in 1794 in Berwardley, Cheshire, England to George and Rebecca Goban Vernon. She grew up in Cheshire, England. At the age of 16, Elizabeth married a sailor names James Silverthorn. The couple had a son and named him James. Soon after the baby was born, James went to see and did not return. Joseph Morris was born on 17 December 1795 in Berwardley, Cheshire, England to James and Hannah Morris. The family lived on a farm near the Silverthorn's home. Joseph met Elizabeth when he was 20 years old. The couple was married on 24 July 1815 in the parish church at Oswald, Cheshire. After two happy years, Elizabeth's first husband reappeared. He had not been lost at sea after all. This must have been a hard and emotional situation. It was finally decided that James would take his son, James, and Elizabeth would stay with Joseph. Elizabeth never heard from her son again. Joseph and Elizabeth had a family of six children together, including William Morris. Elizabeth was an expert seamstress and made linings for the shoes Joseph made. Elizabeth died on 10 October 1839 in Berwardley at the age of 45. She was buried at the Church of Dukinfield, Cheshire, England. Joseph died 28 April 1861 at the age of 66 and was buried at St. John's Church in Dukinfield, Cheshire, England on 1 May 1861. (S27).

She married (2) Joseph MORRIS on 24 July 1815 at St. Oswald’s Church in Chester, Cheshire, England. Joseph adopted her son James from her first marriage.

Joseph was often gone so she moved to Duckinfield to be with her son George.

She suddenly became ill in October 1839 (S6) and died within two weeks, on 2 November 1839 at Dukinfield, Cheshire, England. She was buried at St. Johns Church (Providence Chapel) in Dukinfield, Cheshire, England.

From S25: The [William] Morris family emigrated from England in 1862. They sailed on the Manchester, and arrived in New York on 12 June 1862. It appears that they may have traveled in two companies. They are on the roster for the 1862 Homer Duncan company, but an entry in Church financial records notes that they traveled with the Murdock company. Companies often traveled together. It is possible that they moved from one company to another.. He died 5 November 1900 at Parawon, Iron County, Utah.

LeRoy Anderson, 1988, Utah State University Press, p. 17, 18, states, I, myself, being so much urged upon to get married, and being satisfied, according to her...words, that she had no engagement, I considered that I had a right to form an acquaintance with her. ..I did so, and ...(later) I found out her feelings toward me, I asked her mother for her. I then considered that I had full liberty to court and marry her, having gained proper consent from all quarters. Accordingly, I did so. 'About three days after our marriage hell broke out...James Snow and his associates made her believe that I had married her against her will. Allick Williams and another man (named) Windsor went to her and gave her counsel against me, which caused her to leave me. Nothing would satisfy her after that bua bill of divorcement. She then went and filed an affidavit against me, stating that I had unlawfully obtained her to be my wife by using an influence from the devil. I saw that they were determined to take her away from me, so I had to let her go. He was leader of the Morrisites and self proclaimed prophet of the group.
