HUSBAND:
[F48]. Robert Albert HANDY. [PC H1.
Born 31 January 1804 in Green County or Barren County (probably Green County), Kentucky; son of Jesse HANDY and Elizabeth HALL.
(Ancestry.com entries say he is Robert Albert Handy. Ancestry correspondent WWarner316 says: Bob Handy (Robert J. Handy) was married to my wifes cousin Brenda Broker. WIFE (1):
Rosanna DALE. (Rosa)(Rosy)
Born 11 August 1806 in Barren County, Kentucky; daughter of Isaac M. DALE and Margaret FRAZIER.
She married Robert A. HANDY [F48] on 1 FEB 1821. They were married (by Manoah Lassley, Pastor of the Pleasant Ridge Meeting House)(by John Dever-S9).
She is called Rosy Doyle on Adair County, Ky., Marriage Bonds, page 18 (S26). This record, and spelling of the name as Doyle, has caused much confusion. It is probably the source of her being called Rosy Doyle Moss by the publication Methodist History of Adair County, Kentucky, 1782-1969. It is believed that the name Moss is attached by this record because in the place in the publication where this name is found, it is directly among a list of other Moss family members, and the recorder was confused and attached the Moss name to Rosy along with the other Moss family members. Confusion is also indicated in that she is mentioned as married to Robert Handy, implying that it is the early area settler Robert Handy of his grandfather's generation.
One additional note from this record: This record is a record of marriage bonds. This means the marriage could have been performed on the same day as the bond, or it could have been performed on a later date. Pending further information as to the actual marriage day, we will continue to use 1 February 1821 as the marriage day until further confirmation of the actual day is found.
She is called Rosy Dayle in her marriage record. This marriage record has apparently been transcribed several times, and it appears that Doyle is an incorrect transcription of Dayle. The following transcriptions are found from the record, Kentucky County Marriages, 1783-1965 (S26):
* Rosy Dayle. FHL Film Number 000469187.
* Rosy Dayle. FHL Film Number 001904582.
* Rosy Dayle. FHL Film Number 000830575.
That her name is correctly Rosanna Dale is indicated in the will of her father, Isaac M. Dale, who wrote his will on 19 September 1816, in which he names his family members including his daughter Rosanna Dale. (S28).
She died 10 July 1849, probably in Kentucky, though some sources say Missouri. Since her last child was born on 4 July 1849 in Green County, Kentucky, it is probable that she died there, and likely of complications due to the birth.
CHILDREN of Robert A. HANDY [F48] and Rosanna DALE [F49]:
- Jesse HANDY. Born on 16 February 1822 in Green County, Kentucky. He died on 1 September 1823 in Green County, Kentucky.
- Isaac HANDY. Born on 16 August 1823 in Green County, Kentucky. He died on 24 September 1823 in Green County, Kentucky.
- Margurite HANDY. Born on 1 November 1824 in Green County, Kentucky. She died on 15 March 1825 in Green County, Kentucky.
- George N. HANDY. Born 15 January 1826 in Green County, Kentucky. He died on 21 July 1852 in Green County, Kentucky.
- David R. (R.-S10)(or W.)(D.W.-S6)(David Washington-S8) HANDY. Born on 25 November 1827 in Green County, Kentucky. He married Mary Jane PHILIPS (COOK-S6) on 21 March 1850. They are in the 1850 Census in Hart County, Kentucky. They lived in Kentucky until the year of 1865 when they moved to Daviess county, Missouri, settling on a farm three miles south of Salem. He remained on the farm three years, when he sold his farm and went into the mercantile business at Bancroft in this county. Here he remained about a year when he sold out and moved to Salem, buying out the store of his brother, R. W. Handy. He remained in business at Salem until 1879, when he sold out again, and since that time has been engaged in farming and raising and dealing in stock. He recently sold his farm of 500 acres adjoining the town of Salem for $9,000, and now thinks of resuming the mercantile business at the first favorable opportunity. He held the office of trustee and treasurer of Salem township, to which office he was elected in April, 1881. He was a member of the Baptist Church for twenty-two years. They have seven children living, as follows: Maggie, wife of J. I. Weldon of Salem; James B., Aaron, William F., Ida B., Olley and Charles M. One child, a boy, named John, died in 1858 at the age of one year. (S6). He died on 10 May 1907 in Coffey, Daviess, Missouri.
- Annie (Anna-S15)(Anna Elvira-Ancestry family trees) HANDY. Born 19 October 1829 in Green County, Kentucky. She married William EVANS on (24)(26-S15) September 1849 in Barren County, Kentucky. She died (10 September 1858)(15 April 1859)(16 April 1860).
- Richard (A.-S10)(M.)(R.W.?-S6)(Richard Washington-S14) HANDY. Born (25 November 1827-Ancestry family trees)(15 September 1831) in Green County, Kentucky. He is listed as Richard A. in the 1850 census, which indicates he was born about 1831-1832. He married Nancy Elizabeth WELDON on 16 December 1852 in Hart County, Kentucky. D.W. Handy bought the store of this brother, R.W. Handy, in Salem, Missouri about 1869 or 1870. (S6). They had children Bessie Mae Handy, James Forrest Handy. He died 10 May 1907 in Coffey, Daviess County, Missouri.
- William Franklin HANDY. Born 1 April 1833 in Green County or Barren County, Kentucky. He married America Jane RENFRO on (9)(15-S16) February 1854 in Barren County, Kentucky. America was born in May 1834 in Kentucky. They had children William Robert (Willie) Handy, Elizabeth M. Handy (md John Callahan), James Albert Handy. (S16,S17). They are in the 1880 Census in Hiseville, Barren County, Kentucky. America is in the household of daughter Elizabeth in the 1900 Census in Hiseville, Barren County, Kentucky, so presumably William had died by this time.
- John N. HANDY. Born 27 November 1834 in Green County, Kentucky. He died on 7 June 1862, said to be as a soldier in the Civil War.
- Joseph M. HANDY. Born 9 June 1836 in Green County or Barren County, Kentucky. He married Mary F. BURCH on 30 October 1856 in (Hart County or Barren County-S19), Kentucky. He is in Barren County, Kentucky for the 1860 census. He was in Winston, Daviess, Missouri for the 1880 census. He died 9 June 1892.
- Elizabeth HANDY. Born 30 March 1838 in Green County or Barren County, Kentucky. She married Thomas DUKE on 15 January 1854 in Barren County, Kentucky. They had children John D. Duke, James F. Duke. She is said (Ancestry family trees) to have died in Putnam, Indiana.
- Miles Jasper HANDY. Born 26 August 1839 in Hart County, Kentucky. Miles is found in the family of Lenis and Ruthy Davis in Hart County, Kentucky in the 1850 Census. In the household are also David Handy (age 15) and Simion Handy (age 13). (S21). In the 1860 census, Miles is hired out as a farmhand in Barren County, Kentucky, with no indication of parentage. He married (1) Lucy Agnes PEDIGO (b. 1844 Barren Co, KY- d. 9 AUG 1880 Collins, MO) in 1861; daughter of Elijah PEDIGO and Frances HARPER. He served in the Civil War in the 30th Regiment, Kentucky Infantry. He was living in Collins, Saint Clair, Missouri in the 1880 census with wife Lucy A. and children William, Claborn, Marthy, Ruth, Theadotia, Mary, and Sarah E.. Miles married (2) Charlotte Temple Francis about 1885. Miles abandoned the 7 living children of Lucy Agnes when he remarried. Miles filed for a Civil War pension on 16 July 1887. He are Charlotte are in Johnson Township, Humansville city, Polk County, Missouri in the 1900 Census; with children Charles B. Handy and daughter Rosa M. Martin and her husband Henry O. Martin. He died (after 1900)(on 27 September 1906-Ancestry family files) in Humansville, Polk County, Missouri. NOTE: Miles Jasper Handy may be the nephew of Robert A. Handy rather than his son. (S20). One indicaiton of this is that there are not quite seven months between the birth of him and James Marion Handy.
- James Marion HANDY. Born 16 March 1840 at Jameson, Green County, Kentucky. He married (1) Sarah M. STOVALL on 22 February 1866. He married (2) Emma Lydia Chandler, widow Gordon, sometime between 1905 and 1910. He died on 21 January 1911 at Smith Center, Smith County, Kansas. It is not known if he was buried with Sarah in Phillipsburg, Phillips County, or in Smith County, Kansas; from where his wife was.
- Mansfield Handy. Mansfield is listed in the 1850 census as being born about 1842. (S10).
Mansfield and Claiborn have been confused by some, and sometimes equated as one and the same person, but the 1850 Census in particular gives the correct families and relationships. It is noted that Mansfield is listed in the 1850 Census as being in the family of Robert and Elvira. Claiborn is listed in the family of Robert's brother, John W. Handy. In the 1860 Census, Mansfield is apparently out of the house, while Claiborn is listed as a laborer in his Uncle Robert's household.
Mansfield, son of Robert A. Handy and Rosanna Dale, was 8 years old in 1850, so born about 1842.
Claiborn, son of John W. Handy and Mary Smith, was 9 years old in 1850, so born about 1841.
Mansfield is said (Ancestry family trees) to have died in the Civil War, but this may be part of the confusion with Claiborn. Mansfied may also have died young.
- Robert A. HANDY. (Robert Albert? This is probably correct)(Robert Allen? One Ancestry family file lists him as Robert Allen.). Born 26 August (1841)(1844-from 1860 Census&on the gravestone)(about 1845-from other census records) in Green County, Kentucky. He married (1) Nancy E. (Nannie) Bush on 15 January 1869 in Harrison County, Missouri. They are in the 1870 Census in Sugar Creek, Harrison County, Missouri. They are in the 1880 Census in Osborne, Osborne County, Kansas; where he is a dealer in Dry Goods and General Merchandise. They had son Robert Morton Handy. Nannie apparently died between 1880 and 1885, probably in Osborne. Robert is is and 1885 Kansas State Census, enumerated on 1 March 1885 in Osborne, Kansas; with his sons and two nephews, , Samuel F. Handy, and Richard Scott Handy. He married (2) Adda R. (Addie) Wilridge about 1889. They are in the 1895 Kansas State Census, enumerated on 1 March 1895 in Phillipsburg Township, Phillips County, Kansas. They are in the 1900 Census in Phillipsburg Township, Phillips County, Kansas. They are in the 1910 Census in Denver, Colorado, where he is listed as engaged in Banking. He died sometime between the 1910 Census and the 1920 Census. He is said to be buried in the Fairmount Cemetery, Denver, Colorado. Addie is listed as a widow in the 1920 Census. Addie is in the Denver City Directory in 1922. He and Addie had children Homer Allen Handy (1891-?), Thelma Lucille Handy. (S22). Article from the Colorado Springs Gazette, 7 December 1921: Grandfather of Dead Man was a Pioneer Resident. Robert A. Handy, grandfather of Robert M. Handy, Jr., who died in Boulder, Colo., Monday from a gunshot wound sustained while rabbit hunting the day before, was a pioneer resident of Colorado, Springs, and in the shoe business here before leaving for Denver, Colo. (S25).
- Thomas HANDY. Born 18 October 1846 in Green County, Kentucky. He died 18 October 1846.
- Amanda Francis HANDY. Born 4 June 1849 in Green County, Kentucky. She died 15 August 1849 in Green County.
WIFE (2) of Robert A. HANDY:
Elvira H. BIRCH.
She was born 10 September 1826 in Virginia or Kentucky. Note that her cemetery record says that she was born on 18 September 1823.
She married Robert A. HANDY on 29 Feburary 1850 in Kentucky.
On 19 June 1900 she is enumerated in the 1900 Census as living with her daughter Minerva Belle's household in Phillipsburg Township, Phillips County, Kansas.
She died on 20 September 1900, and was buried in the Packard Cemetery, Cameron, Clinton County, Missouri.
CHILDREN of Robert A. HANDY and Elvira H. BIRCH:
- Manerva Belle HANDY. Born 1 AUG 1852 in Kentucky. She married W. L. STEVENS on 9 April 1872 in Clinton County, Missouri. They apparently had son Willard Stevens born about 1873. (1880 Census). The were divorced. She married John M. Berkley in 1880. They are in the 1900 Census in Phillipsburg Township, Phillips County, Kansas; which was enumerated on 19 June 1900. [NOTE: There was a John M. Berkeley enumerated in an agicultural census on 7 June 1870 in Ellsworth County, Kansas; where Manerva's brother later lived. Is there a connection?]
- Jerome Birch HANDY. Born 12 June 1855 in Barren County, Kentucky. He is in the 1880 Census in Cameron, Missouri. He married Kate Stone in 1882. They lived in Ellsworth, Ellsworth County, Kansas. He is said to be in Colorado in 1930, possibly with his half-brother Robert. He died in 1935. Both he and Kate were buried in the Mount Washington Cemetery, Independence, Jackson County, Missouri.
