Ralph Basset and Alice Audley

HUSBAND:
Ralph Basset. [Our Basset Ancestors].
Born about 1305 in Drayton Basset, Staffordshire, England; son of Ralph Basset and Joan de Grey (de la Pole). (S1,S3).

He married Alice de Audley on 30 May 1334 in Heleigh, Staffordshire, England. (S2,S3).

13 Dec 1334: "with remainder to Ralph Basset the younger, Alice his wife and the heirs of their bodies" (S3).

6 Aug 1335: "Mandate to archbishops, bishops, abbots, priors, earls, barons, knights, mayors, bailiffs, ministers, commonalties and all others in the counties of Gloucester, Worcester, Hereford, Salop, and Stafford, by the fealty, homage and love which they owe to the king, to treat diligently and carefully with Ralph Basset of Drayton, who is coming from the king to concert with them measures for the defence of the realm against hostile invasion, now credibly reported to be imminent, and to inform them of the result of the deliberation of the king's council at York in this behalf." This could be the father of this Ralph, still alive at the time. (S3).

He died about 1335 (S2,S3) in Drayton Basset, Staffordshire, England. (S3).

Inquisitions Post Mortem.
Richard de Amoundevile, knight.
"Writ, after the death of the said Richard, who held by knight’s service of the heir of Ralph son of Ralph son of Ralph Basset of Drayton, a minor in the king’s wardship, June, 24 Edward III." [1350] "Ralph Basset of Drayton, grandfather of the Ralph now a minor in the king’s wardship, who held the manor of the earl of Warwick, gave it to Richard de Amondeville, father of the deceased, and the heirs male of his body, to hold of the said Ralph and his heirs by service of 10l. yearly; and so the deceased held the manor as heir of the aforesaid Richard, of the heir of Ralph son of Ralph son of the aforesaid Ralph Basset of Drayton. The manor should revert to this heir because the deceased died without heir male of his body. The rent of 10l. was assigned in dower to Alesia, late the wife of Ralph Basset, father of the said heir, now married to Hugh de Menyl, and so the said manor is worth nothing to the guardian or heir during her life." (S2).

WIFE:
Alice de Audley.
Born about 1315 in Heleigh Castle, Madeley, Staffordshire, England; daughter of (Lord) Nicholas Audley and Joan Martin.

She married (1) Ralph Basset on 30 May 1334 in Heleigh, Staffordshire, England. They had 1 son (Sir Ralph, 3rd Lord Basset). (S2).

Alice de Audley married (2) Sir Hugh de Meinhill, son of Sir Hugh de Meinhill and Joan de la Warde, between 31 July 1337 and 1340; They had 3 sons (Thomas; John; & Robert) and 1 daughter (Isabel, wife of Sir Ralph de Shirley, of Sir John de Wodhull; & of Sir Gerard Braybrooke). (S2).

She died after 1358 in Drayton Basset, Staffordshire, England. (S2).

Hugh de Meinhill (Meynell).
Born before 1312 in Langley Meynell (in Kirk Langley), Derbyshire, England; son of Hugh de Meynell and Joan Ward. (S4).

Hugh died on 2 May 1363. (S4).

Inquisition Post Mortem.
"Writ, 12 May, 37 Edward III." [1363]
"The reversion after his death belongs to Thomas his son and the heirs of his body. Thomas is 23 years of age and more."
"The reversion belongs to Ralph Basset of Drayton, knight, by virtue of a grant of Ralph Basset of Drayton, his grandfather."
"He died on the feast of SS. Philip and James last. Richard de Meignill his son, aged 30 years and more, is his heir, but has nothing in co. Stafford by hereditary descent."
"A messuage and a carucate of land, held of Richard Meignill, knight, (fn. 6) for life, by homage and fealty. The reversion belongs to Thomas de Meignill, his son, and the heirs of his body."
"The manor, held jointly with Joan late his wife, and the heirs of their bodies, of the duke of Lancaster by homage and fealty."
"He died on 2 May, 37 Edward III. Heir, Richard de Meignill, knight, his son, as above." (S4).

Hugh has two sons inheriting different properties, in his Inquisition Post Mortem. That son Richard is also said to be 30 "and more" (born bef. 1333), suggests that Hugh had two wives, Richard being born to the first, and Thomas inheriting lands received through the second marriage, to Alice. (S4).
